Hurdtown United Methodist Church

The Holley family became the next leaders of church life at Hurdtown and for six generations have continued to devode their lives in service.

Family member Phebe Jane Martin was awarded a certificate for perfect attendance, December 25, 1872 in the newly dedicated church. Phebe had attended church school in the palors of private homes while the church was under contruction.

At the 90th Anniversary celebration, Holley family members, Phebe Jane, Henritta and Eva receivedspecial recognition from Reverend H. W. Cramsey for giving a lifetime of service to the church.

Catherine Daniel Lawrence became the first woman lay reader and served from 1970 to 1074. She served the church for 25 years in the capacity of the church school superintendent, teacher, leader of adult seminars, representative for the church at conference level, camp counselor and a leader in the Ecumenical movement in the lakeland area.

Sylvia Ellen Daniel Rierske held the position of lay reader from 1974 to 1976 and worked within the church for 22 years.

Cecelia Ethel Daniel Scott received a pin for 13 years of perfect attendance and was the only person to receive this honor. She also served a superintendant, teacher and treasurer of the church school was women's Society President for two years and at the present time is serving as church historian.

The sixth generation of the Holley family to serve the church is Theodore Danial. He was active in church school and is now serving as Vice President of the Board of Trustee.

The Ecumenical Movement originated at the Hurdtown Methodist Church under the leadership of Reverent Mather and Freida Kallus. The movement started with six churches and soon many more became involved. Their aim was to foster understanding of faith and educational work between the demoniations in the lake area. The first Ecumenical workshop service was held in March 1969 with 200 people in attendance Seminars were held by the association of churches and were open to the public. Over 100 people attended the popular workshop, "Death and Dying" lead by a prominent doctor and lawyer from the area.

Members of the Methodist Chuch of Hurdtown are proud of their heritage and hope to continue to serve within the community of Hurdtown for many years to come.

Final applications forms have been submitted to Trenton in the hopes of making this beautiful Church a historical site."
