The LAKERS are a group of youth and adults from the United Methodist Church of Lake Hopatcong and Hurdtown United Methodist Church and other dedicated individuals.
For the past four years we have participated in the Appalachia Service Project (ASP) ASP is a home repair ministry which organizes groups from all over the country to come to Appalachia during the summer. Each group spends a week helping to repair homes to make them warmer and safer for the families who are in need.
Last year the LAKER’S had 26 members and traveled to Gary , West Virginia . Our group along with other volunteers stayed in one of the schools that have been closed over the past years. We divided into four work crews and were assigned a home to help repair. During the week in Gary our work crews raised a roof on one home. Another team dug a drainage ditch to prevent flooding and built a wall. While our third group completed the flooring and railing on a deck, they also built the stairs and put a gate on for safety. Our fourth group insulated beneath the flooring of the home and installed underpinning.
This mission trip is always a rewarding experience for all and are grateful for the support from both churches and friends.
