Liturgy, What is it?
While we agree that God calls men and women to lead and guide his people, we believe that when we gather together, what we do needs to be something that is representative of our community, not just a select few.
We know “liturgy” is one of those “church words” that may or may not hold any significance to most of us. However, this word has been extremely important to the history of the church.
At Hurdtown when we use the word we are basically referring to all that takes place during our worship gatherings.
For us, this includes:
- call to worship
- welcome and greeting eachother
- singing and reflection
- prayer of confession and prayer for others
- communion
- preaching
- offering
- benediction.
It’s About Community
All too often, these things are seen as “the things the pastors do.” While we agree that God calls men and women to lead and guide his people, we believe that when we gather together, what we do needs to be something that is representative of our community, not just a select few.
In fact, the word “liturgy” literally means, “the work of the people.” With this definition in mind, liturgy at Hurdtown includes not only the pastors, but also all the people from our community.
